These exceptional gardens were originally designed and
constructed in the 1920s by wealthy shipping line owner, Sir James Knott. Inspired by an enthusiasm for plants and a special interest in the Orient, he created a rich diversity of planting which included many rare and special plants: a
Japanese Garden, rock and water gardens, formal gardens,
large ponds with islands and camellia plantations are the
result of his passion.
